Chumbe Island

Chumbe Island Coral Park is an award winning nature reserve that was developed for the conservation and sustainable management of uninhabited Chumbe Island off Zanzibar.

Overview

Chumbe Island is an eco friendly accommodation which only makes use of environmental friendly materials and products. Freshwater is supplied from rainwater, which is captured from a specially designed expanse of roof, during the rainy season. The water is filtered and hand pumped through a solar-powered heating system for guests to use. Lights are powered by photovoltaic panels on the roof which provides environmentally friendly 12V energy for normal usage. The walkways, nature trails and beach areas are not lit up with illuminators as this protects the feeding and breeding patterns of the nocturnal animals, such as the rare giant Coconut Crab (Birgus latro) which grows up to 1meter in size. Individual powered torches are used instead.

Situated in a nature reserve, Chumbe Island guarantees a variety of activities. Snorkel through the unique Reef Sanctuary where no fishing and anchoring is allowed. Snorkelers can see all the underwater wonders such as batfishes, hawksbill turtles, potato groupers and more. Explore the Forest Reserve and historical monuments such as Chumbe Lighthouse. After a long day of excursions dine under the huge palm thatched roof which stretches over the historical lighthouse keeper’s house, which has been converted into a visitor’s centre.
